Blackburn are to make Australian defender Lucas Neill an improved contract offer in an attempt to keep him at the club.

Neill´s current deal expires at the end of the season and he has already turned down one contract offer from Rovers. Blackburn rejected a bid by Liverpool for the 28-year-old last week and will now try and persuade Neill to agree to a new deal otherwise the defender will be able to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Blackburn chairman John Williams told PA Sport: "It´s still our intention that Lucas will sign a new contract and we will be presenting him with a new variation shortly. He did turn our first offer down before the World Cup but we will be offering him an improved version."
