Gareth Southgate's position as Middlesbrough boss was under more pressure on Saturday night after a goalless Barclays Premier League draw with Wigan stretched Boro's winless league run to 14 games.
Southgate watched in agony as Gary O'Neil saw an 86th-minute drive deflected to safety off keeper Chris Kirkland's legs as the visitors hung on in a game marred by a serious-looking injury to Didier Digard.
Digard was stretchered off in the 16th minute after a challenge by former Boro midfielder Lee Cattermole, while O'Neil and Brazilian Afonso Alves were both controversially booked for diving.
