Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins has admitted that Stockport defender Michael Raynes is a transfer target.
However, Adkins says he has not placed a bid for the 22-year-old centre-back and that he does not know where the stories have come from.
"Yes, Michael is one of several young players who we have been watching over the past 12 months," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
He added: "But I have not spoken to anyone from Stockport and I have not submitted a bid for him.
"I really do not know where these stories come from.
"I do know that allegedly they have financial problems and may have to sell players. Maybe that is where it has come from."
