A rare brace of goals from Graham Alexander gave Burnley their first victory of the Coca-Cola Championship season as they edged a closely contested affair against Nottingham Forest.

Burnley looked to have been denied their first win at the City Ground for 45 years when Rob Earnshaw's tap-in cancelled out Alexander's first-half free-kick.

But when substitute Ade Akinbiyi forced a penalty 20 minutes from time, the Scotland international made no mistake despite a lengthy delay in proceedings.

Ben Watson and Nick Carle helped Crystal Palace to a 2-0 home win over Swansea, while Steven Kabba snatched an 86th-minute winner for Blackpool at home to Barnsley.

Preston slipped to third as they were held to a goalless draw by Coventry at the Ricoh Arena. Sean St Ledger went closest for the visitors with a header that hit the bar.

Fourth-placed Bristol City also played out a scoreless stalemate with Cardiff at Ninian Park, the Robins' Nicky Maynard rattling the bar in an entertaining contest.
