Star of the weekend
Gonzalo Jara has already performed at centre half, right back and left back for West Brom this season, but the Chilean produced a masterclass performance from the middle of midfield to help the Baggies to a 2-1 win at Leicester on Saturday. The £1.4 million signing rounded off a superb personal display with a 30-yard corker five minutes from time and manager Roberto Di Matteo said: “What is Jara’s best position? I can’t answer that yet. But he can definitely play at a higher level.”
Game of the weekend
Swansea claimed the South Wales bragging rights after a hard-fought 3-2 victory over bitter rivals Cardiff at the weekend. The Swans took an early two-goal lead through Nathan Dyer and Darren Pratley, but the Bluebirds levelled before the break with strikes from Jay Boothroyd and Mark Hudson. The all-important winner came 16 minutes into the second half when Pratley volleyed home his second at the near post.
Quote of the weekend
Preston boss Alan Irvine was less than happy with his team’s display in the 2-0 defeat at Watford, saying: “It was awful. We were second best all over the pitch and we did not do the things needed to win games in this division. You can only win by being properly organised, with everyone doing their jobs, competing and working hard and we didn’t do that. It was unacceptable.”
Controversial moment of the weekend
Doncaster boss Sean O’Driscoll insisted skipper Martin Woods was harshly sent off after picking up two debatable yellow cards in the 2-1 defeat at Plymouth. “If the ref had waited four or five seconds, would he have made the decision? I think common sense would have prevailed,” said O’Driscoll. “I am not hanging him out to dry – we all make mistakes.”
Goal of the weekend
QPR’s Latvian defender Kaspars Gorkss scored his first goal for the club with a towering header in Rangers’ 2-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday. The no-nonsense centre half said: “We haven’t been particularly good at set-pieces this season, that’s the first we have scored, so hopefully we can improve on that.”
