Burnley’s experienced goalkeeper Brian Jensen says the Clarets’ two wins against Sheffield United during the domestic season will count for very little when the two sides battle it out for a place in the Premier League on Monday.
Owen Coyle’s side should go into Championship play-off final full of confidence after beating the Blades 3-2 at Bramall Lane in December and 1-0 in the return fixture at Turf Moor last month, but Jensen said: “It’s nothing to do with that to be honest, it’s a completely different game.
“It’s a one-off match so whatever has happened in the past makes absolutely no difference whatsoever to the final. It is going to be a hard-fought game because they are a very good side.
“It meant everything to us to reach the final. It’s been a long time coming. Everybody was set up for it and it was really nice to get to Wembley.”
Martin Paterson
One of Burnley’s goalscorers in that victory away to Sheffield United was Martin Paterson, but he isn’t reading too much into past results either. “I think form means nothing when you get to these sorts of games. It is all about on the day and I will be looking to score again,” he said.
“The groups of lads we’ve got is terrific, the togetherness. That means more to me at the moment than the rewards in football. And what I mean by that is that it’s a great set of lads doing it. There are no big-time Charlies, we’re all in it together, fighting for the cause.”
Paterson added: “I look across and see people like
Graham Alexander (37) and
Robbie Blake (33) who are getting on, no offence. It might be their last chance to win promotion or get into the Premier League so I want to do it for them.”
