Nigel Clough is set to wield the axe on his failing Derby squad - with just four players still in the manager's plans.

Clough is fed up of players who do not seem to care about the club and who do not 'hurt' when the team loses, instead bothering more about their super-rich lifestyles. Only captain Robbie Savage, goalkeeper Stephen Bywater and defenders Shaun Barker and Dean Moxey escaped Clough's criticism.

"Somebody said to me that some players today like to be footballers without playing football and that's not a bad way of putting it," said Clough.

He added: "They like all the trappings and everything that goes with it without doing what is necessary to get to a certain level. But it`s black and white now, if you`re not doing your job, off you go. They can all go with the exception of three or four we want around us.

"It should hurt them when we lose and they`re the ones we want. The skipper is one we are talking about, it hurts him, and the goalkeeper and they will be staying with us all the way. I see some desire in Shaun Barker and in Dean Moxey.

"How much it hurts the others, we`re not sure and that`s difficult for us to take. You can`t instil heart in players but that`s what we want and I think it`s what the fans want too."
