Coventry look set to sign Martin Cranie after agreeing an undisclosed fee with Portsmouth.

The England Under-21 defender is due at the Ricoh Arena on Wednesday to undergo a medical, with the Championship club hoping to complete the deal later in the day.

Cranie, 22, started his career as a trainee at Southampton, having loan spells at Bournemouth and Yeovil before switching to south-coast rivals Pompey in June 2007.

He enjoyed a month-long spell at QPR later that year before spending the first half of last season with Charlton, making 19 league starts.

Yet he has managed just two Premier League appearances, one of those coming from the bench, during his three years at Fratton Park and now looks set for a move to the West Midlands.

Cranie was one of the top performers for England at this summer's European Championship, netting the opening goal in the dramatic semi-final triumph over hosts Sweden.
