Southampton are expected to announce today the extent of Sir Clive Woodward's involvement in the club's coaching set-up.

The England rugby coach is set to make his own announcement after resigning from that role and following further talks with his RFU bosses. The Saints' board will hold a meeting later in the day to discuss his switch to association football with the south coast club.

Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson will be sweating on the results of a Thursday scan that will determine when the £27million striker will make his Manchester United debut.

Fergie said: "We don't know exactly when Wayne will be available. He goes for another scan today then it will be much clearer."

Freddie Shepherd has claimed that top managers are queuing up to replace Sir Bobby Robson. David O'Leary and Terry Venables are the latest to be linked with the Newcastle hot seat.

Chairman Freddie Shepherd says: "We've been swamped with interest from some of the best managers in the game which is not surprising as this is one of the top eight managerial jobs in the world."

Crystal Palace striker Ivan Kaviedes has been sent home by Ecuador ahead of Sunday's World Cup qualifier with Uruguay for a breach of discipline.

The striker, who recently joined Palace for £2 million, defied coach Luis Fernando Suarez to visit his former club Barcelona. Suarez said: "He snubbed the squad, did not meet the required norms and is not in the team for the breach of discipline he committed."

Gary Neville said the country should not panic if England do not get off to a winning start in the World Cup qualifying campaign. With Austria coming up on Saturday, followed by Poland next week, Neville said: "Obviously we'll be going for six points but we lost to Italy at the start of our 1998 campaign and Germany in 2001 but still managed to qualify."

Sven-Goran Eriksson, meanwhile, believes the new Wembley stadium will be the most beautiful stadium in the world and hopes to be coaching England at the futuristic venue.

The England coach joined captain David Beckham at a glittering 'topping-out' ceremony to celebrate the building reaching its full height. Sven said: "I hope I am still in the job so I can sit on the bench at least once, at Wembley."
