Doncaster have moved to sign out-of-contract defender Pascal Chimbonda on a short-term deal.

The Frenchman, who last played for QPR before being released in April, becomes Dean Saunders' first signing as Rovers manager and is contracted initially until the opening of the January transfer window.

The 32-year-old featured for Doncaster in a specially arranged friendly at the Keepmoat Stadium against Chesterfield, and will finalise the deal subject to successfully completing a medical and gaining clearance.

The full-back shone with Wigan in his first season in the Premier League following a move from French outfit Bastia, earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year as well as claiming a League Cup runners-up medal.

He then completed a £4.5million move to Tottenham before spells with Sunderland and Blackburn, eventually joining QPR last January.

Chimbonda has a single cap for France, as well as a World Cup runners-up medal from his involvement in the national squad in the 2006 tournament in Germany.
