Paul Mariner has moved a step closer to a return to his former club Plymouth Argyle after reportedly being offered the job as technical director at Home Park.

The 56-year-old spent three years as an Argyle player between 1973 and 1976 before going on to wear the colours of Ipswich, Arsenal and Portsmouth, while he also won 35 England caps.

Mariner is currently working as the no.2 to ex-Liverpool full back Steve Nicol at American MLS side New England Revolution, but he is believed to be eyeing a return to England.

The Pilgrims have not confirmed they have been in talks with the Revolution although Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock is thought to be interested in working with Mariner, while the American outfit have admitted there has been contact with the Championship side.

Like Sturrock, Mariner has thus far been unwilling to comment on developments but director of communications for the Revolution Lizz Summers, said: “Plymouth have asked permission to speak to Paul, which we have granted.

“At this point, nothing is final and Paul and the rest of the coaches are concentrating on a key match against Chicago.”
