Doncaster’s Billy Sharp is enjoying the best run of his career at the Keepmoat Stadium after joining on loan from Sheffield United for the season.
Sharp has hit ten goals this season - nine of them for Rovers…and his impressive strike against Bristol City last Saturday was his fifth in successive games. The Rovers faithful have taken him to their hearts and he is rapidly becoming a cult hero under the tutelage of manager Sean O’Driscoll.
However, due to Sharp’s excellent form, the January transfer window is sure to be a worrying time for O’Driscoll and all Doncaster supporters as the vultures will start to circle.
However, as he spoke to givemefootball’s Ian Clarkson and said that he intends to see it out at Rovers until the end of the season.
Another goal to add to the tally Billy, how does it rate among the others?
It’s probably one of the best of my career, I’ve only ever scored one outside the box once before and that was a cross. I could see their guy was trying to head it back and wanted to get a shot in early. I was pleased with the way I hit it.
How important was it in a game of few chances?
This was the best we’ve played since I’ve been here to be honest. We’ve got three clean sheets in as many games now, which means we’re going to win a lot of games.
Is this the best run of your career?
I’d never got four in four before, so now it’s five means things are getting better and better. I managed to get my 10th goal of the season so I’m buzzing about that too, it was a good day all round. I want 20 goals a season because I’m a striker, but it doesn’t always happen like that so I’d like 15, that’s good in the Championship and anything more would be great.
The crowd here want you to stay. Can it happen?
I’m not going anywhere until the end of the season, I’ll enjoy it and sort things out after that.
Is your form now similar to when you played for Scunthorpe?
I scored a lot of goals for Scunthorpe but that was a league below. I woke up this morning, and I really felt I was going to score again if I got a chance, but our back four and Neil Sullivan in goal have been great. If we stay confident, we’ll keep climbing the league.
Rovers have done well after conceding four against Forest two weeks ago. Did you have a big rethink after that?
Since Forest we’ve had the bouncebackability after letting ourselves down, now we’ve won three games in a week. We’ll try and keep it going and do the right things. We didn’t get going that day at Forest; we had a good chat and won the next three games.
What’s it like to have the fans here on your side?
My appetite is back for football, I’ve got a smile and the fans have been great to me. I was going into training every day knowing I was getting nothing out of it, I was on the bench and not getting on, or just not involved again. No-one likes that and I’m just thankful I’m playing every week.CLICK HERE to vote Billy Sharp as the Championship PFA Fans' Player of the Month for December.
