Nottingham Forest boss Steve McClaren is lining up a possible move for Giles Barnes.
The 22-year-old forward, who is now back to full fitness having been plagued with injuries in the past, is a free agent having been released by West Brom.
"We've spoken with Giles - he's a player who this area knows very well," McClaren told Forest's official website.
"He's a young talent, he's still 22 but seems to have been around for years. He's had bad injuries and maybe needs a chance and who knows, we may give him that."
Barnes spent time with Forest as a youngster before moving to local rivals Derby where he rose to prominence.
Despite four successful years with the Rams, injuries meant his 18-month stint at the Hawthornes failed to get off the ground.
