Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies is still interested in bringing Aston Villa defender Nicky Shorey back to the City Ground.

A left-back is a top priority for Davies, who insists that squad strengthening is a must if the club are to build on last season's third-place finish.

Shorey shone during a loan spell at the Championship club last season but Davies accepts that doing a deal for the former England international will be far from easy."If Nicky Shorey does not get a Premier League club and there is a possibility that we can do something; if there is a possibility that he could still become available either on loan or permanently - then until that door closes on us, he remains an option," Davies told the Nottingham Evening Post.

"He is one of several players that I have recommended for that position."

The Scot added: "If we want the play-offs again, or better, then we need three to five stellar signings."
