Former Watford captain closes in on new club

Former Watford captain Jay DeMerit has revealed he hopes to join another club within ‘the next couple of weeks’.The 30-year-old is currently a free agent after the Hornets opted against renewing his contract at the end of last season.DeMerit played all four games of the United States' World Cup campaign in South Africa this summer but the centre half has yet to sign for a club."I'm being patient at the moment, that's the only thing I can do," DeMerit told the Football League Podcast."It was nice to have a break but now it's getting to the point where I want to try and get something sorted out. But like everyone knows, movement isn't something that is happening a lot around the football world at the moment so I'm being patient and not chasing something that I don't necessarily want to do."Playing in the World Cup this summer was more or less the ultimate challenge and on a personal level I want to find something that will continue to challenge me. I'm open to most of Europe and to be honest I'm open to going back to the States."Right now it's still a bit slow but hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can make a decision."DeMerit moved to England from the US in 2003 in a bid to fulfil his dream of becoming a professional footballer. He was spotted by Watford playing for Northwood Town and was duly snapped up by then manager Ray Lewington.His six years at Vicarage Road saw Demerit make a total of 182 league appearances for the Hornets, 32 of which were in the Premier League during the 2006/07 season.The Wisconsin-born defender suffered a career threatening eye injury at the beginning of last season and required revolutionary surgery which meant part of his cornea had to be replaced.Despite being released earlier this summer by Watford, DeMerit insists he still supports the club and travelled to watch the 2-2 draw with Coventry on Saturday."I thought what better way to go down to Vicarage Road and be a fan for once which was a bit surreal to be honest but you still want to support who you support," he said. “After having so many good years at Watford I still support them and the club and it was good to go down there, see the faces and tell them what I've been up to."Disclaimer: The views in this article are that of the writer and may not replicate those of the Professional Footballers' Association.
