Nigel Pearson was left to rue a string of missed opportunities by his Leicester City side as the Foxes suffered their first league defeat of the season against Newcastle at St James’ Park yesterday.

Steve Howard and Matty Fryatt both failed to make the most of gilt-edged opportunities in the first period, and the visitors were made to pay when Danny Guthrie spectacularly fired home the only goal of the game - a result which sends the Magpies to the top of the table.

Pearson said: “We could have got something from the game if we had taken our chances. Apart from the fact that we didn’t take our chances, it wasn’t bad in the first half.

“It was a match that we looked forward to and expected to get something out of. We thought it was a game we could come and win.

“I don’t think there was a lot in the game but the goal we conceded wasn’t good from our point of view.

“It wasn’t a brilliant game and both sides turned the ball over too many times, but I don’t think the conditions contributed to that.”

The Foxes now head into the international break having taken a satisfactory eight points from their first five league games, and Pearson added: “We have had a relatively decent start. Last night was disappointing, but you have to put it into perspective.

“We will debrief on the game and then get on with the task of preparing for the next one.”
