Coventry goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has been tipped to be the future number one for his country.

The 24-year-old made his Republic of Ireland debut in Friday's 1-1 draw with Nigeria and his performance caught the eye of regular stopper Shay Given.

"He's a very good goalkeeper and has impressed me in training," the Manchester City man said.

"He'll be the future Irish goalkeeper, for sure, pushing harder in the next couple of years and then after that I'm sure he'll get the mantle."

Westwood knows he will have a job dethroning Given, though, and is fully expecting to have to wait his turn.

"Shay is a personal hero of mine and for him to say that makes my day, but he's got another 10 years left," he said. "I'm just proud to be in the squad."
