Reading forward Noel Hunt is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery.

The Republic of Ireland striker scored 13 times for the Royals last season but has been struggling for fitness and form this campaign, with both of his only goals to date coming in a win at Barnsley in August.

Hunt hasn't featured since a 3-1 defeat at West Brom a fortnight ago and could be out for some time.

A club statement said: "Noel has been troubled by a knee problem for some time and this operation will see him back to full fitness.

"We will monitor his progress and we will have a clearer indication of his progress and recuperation in a few weeks' time."
