Defender John Johnson insists he had no doubts about swapping a promotion challenge with Middlesbrough for a League Two dogfight with Northampton.

The 20-year-old has signed a one-month loan deal at Sixfields and is set for a debut at Shrewsbury on Saturday as the Cobblers look to pull clear of the very bottom of the Football League.

"Middlesbrough are doing very well at the minute so when I had the chance to come and play first-team football I jumped at it," he said.

"I worked with Malcolm Crosby at Middlesbrough and I am very grateful for him bringing me down here.

"I made my debut against Chelsea and we lost 5-0 which wasn`t the best start but I enjoyed my loan spell at Tranmere last season and am looking to kick on.

"The lads have made a bad start to the season but it only takes one win to turn a season around."
