Ipswich manager Roy Keane has declared his interest in signing Sol Campbell after the defender quit Notts County - even though he admits it would be "a long shot".
The former Tottenham and Arsenal centre-back, 35, is not expected to be allowed to sign for another club until the transfer window reopens in January. But Irishman Keane on Friday suggested he could swoop if a deal could be done to bring the former England international to the Coca-Cola Championship club.
"It depends on his contract situation," Keane said in the Irish Independent. "If his contract is terminated then I don't think he can play for anyone else (until) January. But we are interested in players who are available and who can come in and strengthen our squad. But that's a big if. It would be a long shot, no doubt."
Keane continued: "We're interested in any player who is available and would be interested in coming to Ipswich.
"I'm sure Sol, if he can play because I don't know the situation with his contract, will have plenty of options because he is a good player. We'll see.
"I had a similar situation when I left (Manchester) United. I had my contract and couldn't play for someone else until January although I was told something different and that's a different story.
"I think Sol has had a lot of criticism over the last few days but I admire people who make a decision."
