Shefki Kuqi has been given permission to miss Finland's international friendly against Malta next week to prepare for a hectic March schedule which could define Swansea's season.

The recent signing from TuS Koblenz, who has scored twice in his last three starts, was due to represent his country in Malta next week. However, he opted to remain in Wales as the Swans prepare for a busy month that will see them play seven Coca-Cola Championship games, including crunch clashes against Nottingham Forest and West Brom.

"I spoke with the coach in Finland and he understood the situation." Kuqi told the club's official website. "We have seven games in March so it is a very busy time for us. There is going to be a lot of travelling involved and as the game in Malta was only a friendly I asked if I could be left out of the squad."

He added: "To be fair he was happy for me to stay behind and for that I am grateful."
