Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws has revealed the club are in talks with Derby over on-loan striker Luke Varney's future.

Varney has scored three goals for the Owls since arriving from Pride Park in August but his loan spell is due to finish in January.

Laws is keen to keep hold of Varney but told a fans' forum that financial restraints could be a stumbling block. "We're in discussions with Derby, we spoke to them on Tuesday," said Laws.

He added: "We've still got to have discussions about what they want to do with the player, bearing in mind he's got two and a bit years left on his contract."

Laws revealed he had informed Derby boss Nigel Clough of the financial restraints, adding: "We'd be happy to keep Luke Varney but we haven't got any money."
