Wednesday's Leigh Bromby has been the source of much speculation ever since he broke into the first team at Hillsborough - but his thoughts for now are fixed on booking a place in the final of the LDV Vans Trophy. Givemefootball's Lawrie Madden caught up with him after the narrow 1-0 defeat in the first leg of the northern area final at Blackpool.
Q:A FAIR RESULT THE OTHER NIGHT?
A:A bit disappointed really. I thought that we were going to get a goalless draw and then bring them back to Hillsborough in a fortnight's time. I thought that after soaking up some early pressure we were the better side in the first half and their keeper was the busier of the two. I thought we deserved a draw. It was disappointing to concede so late on
Q:HOW DOES THAT LEAVE THE TIE NOW?
A:The manager is very upbeat and believes that we can win the return leg. We will have some important players back from injury and with a big crowd behind us we can turn this around and they have three players out for the return leg.
Q:YOUR FIRST GAME BACK AFTER TWO MONTHS OUT THROUGH INJURY - HOW DID IT GO?
A:I felt it near the end. I got cramp. Ideally, I would have played a few reserve games first and got back a bit of form but our injury situation is so bad that I played.
Q:THINGS WERE GOING WELL BEFORE THE INJURY?
A:I think I played about 20 games on the trot before the injury which was my longest run for a long time and I was getting a bit of form. I was just getting a good partnership with Graeme Lee before the injury. Now I am back and Graeme is injured and that says everything about our season.
Q:DO YOU PREFER PLAYING IN A THREE OR FOUR AT THE BACK?
A:The systems are very different. When you play in a back four you have a full back alongside you whereas in a three you feel you are doing two jobs, being a full back and a centre half. In a three you have to get used to the fact that you will get dragged out wide on the left and even though I am right footed it is not my natural side. But we work on it in training so we get used to it.
Q:A LOT OF PLAYERS ARE OUT OF CONTRACT AT THE END OF THE SEASON. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SITUATION?
A:Most people have been told that contracts will not be sorted out until the end of the season. There are 14 of us who are out of contract and I am hoping to get another one.
Q:THERE HAS BEEN MUCH SPECULATION FOR A WHILE THAT YOU MIGHT BE ON THE MOVE. WHAT IS THE LATEST?
A:Last year, for a number of reasons, I had a mind-set that I was leaving the club but I have been playing this season and I want to stay now. I am fighting for a contract and I have got to prove to the manager that I am worth one, especially as things haven't gone so well. I want to be at Wednesday next season.
Q:IT'S BEEN A DIFFICULT SEASON FOR ALL CONCERNED AT HILLSBOROUGH?
A:This is a difficult division. There are better sides than you think and everyone expected us to go up and that has not happened even though we have a good squad. It was going really well but we have been hit by injuries. We have used over 30-odd players so far this season because of injuries and rarely fielded the same side.
