Luke Chadwick made his first start for West Ham at Crewe on Saturday, and created the first Hammers' goal for Teddy Sheringham. Luke, like Sheringham a former Manchester United player, was instrumental throughout West Ham's domination of the Alex. After the 3-2 victory Luke spoke to givemefootball's Brian Beard.
Q:
IT WAS GETTING A BIT HAIRY FOR WEST HAM AS CREWE PRESSED TOWARDS THE END?
A:
Yes, we were hanging on a bit near the end but I thought we started extremely well and got the three-goal lead in the first half hour, but then I think we lost our concentration and struggled a little to contain them.
Q:
BUT HAVING DOMINATED THE FIRST HALF YOU COULDN'T BUILD ON THAT?
A:
That's right, but at the start of the second half, despite playing quite well, we couldn't get the extra goals to kill the game off and they were able to come back well at the end but we were able to hang on for the three points.
Q:
IT WAS A PRETTY SPECIAL EARLY CAMEO FROM TEDDY WITH THE FIRST TWO GOALS?
A:
Yes, brilliant and you could see his experience shining through in the way he took his goals. Great goals that were typical Teddy, great finishes and they put us on the way to a great result.
Q:
IT WAS SHEER CLASS THAT BOTH GOALS WERE TAKEN WITH A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF EFFORT?
A:
Definitely but then he's done that all his career. Both goals were quality finishes and he knew exactly where he was putting the ball on both occasions.
Q:
WAS YOUR TEAM CAUGHT COLD BY DEAN ASHTON'S GOAL THAT PULLED IT BACK TO 3-1?
A:
Yes, I think so, as a team we weren't concentrating after we went 3-0 up. It was a nice goal for them but not from our point of view.
Q:
WHAT DID YOUR MANAGER SAY TO WEST HAM AT HALF TIME BECAUSE YOU SEEMED TO EASE UP A LITTLE AT THE START OF THE SECOND PERIOD?
A:
He was pleased with our performance although he wasn't happy with the goal and our concentration, after we scored our third, which allowed them to get back in it at 3-1. After our performance last week against Wigan, we had to show a bit more spirit and I think we did that.
Q:
AFTER THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF FAILING TO GET PROMOTION, THAT WAS EXPECTED BY MANY, YOU REALLY HAVE TO TAKE EACH GAME AT A TIME THIS YEAR, DON`T YOU?
A:
Yes, but I think that's what you have to do at any level really. We have a good squad, as we proved, and if we take each game as it comes we can do okay. As for me, I was pleased with my first start and pleased with the result.
