Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has signed a new contract to keep him at the Madejski Stadium until the summer of 2011.

The 19-year-old academy product is behind Adam Federici and Ben Hamer in the pecking order for the Royals and is on loan at League One side Yeovil.

"We are delighted Alex has committed to us with this new contract because he is a talented young goalkeeper with terrific potential," said director of football Nick Hammond.

"He is continuing his development out on loan at the moment and he is a player we have high hopes for."

McCarthy said: "This is massive for me. I love being here and I am very happy to sign this new extension.

"I'm getting more league experience at Yeovil which is great but I would like to come back here next season and try to push for the number one spot."
