Peterborough United have today handed a new four-and-a-half year deal to one of their promising youngsters, Joe Newell.

The 18-year-old former Birmingham City trainee is currently enjoying his breakthrough season at London Road after playing for Conference South side St. Albans City on loan last season.

Newell, who is right footed but prefers to play on the left wing, has figured increasingly throughout this campaign making eight appearances, achieving two starts for Darren Ferguson's Posh in the process.

Newell said of his new contract: "I am delighted, it gives me a bit of security, but i also know that I have to continue to work hard in training."

The winger looks likely to figure prominently in Ferguson's plans for the rest of the season as Peterborough have one of the smallest squads in England's second tier, and chances may come Newell's way if there are injuries to George Boyd, Daniel Kearns or Tommy Rowe.

Players who may follow Joe Newell's transition into the first-team picture include youth-team players Jaanai Gordon-Hutton, Dan Lawler and Peter Grant, who have all figured as unused substitutes this campaign.
