Watford eyes will be on Malky Mackay as he attempts to prove that new Reading boss Brendan Rodgers won’t be missed at Vicarage Road – and he fully intends to make the most of his first opportunity in management.
“I have been given the chance to be the manager of the football club and I respect the chance I have been given, so I am here to do the best job I can for the club for as long as I can, you can be sure of that,” he told the Watford Observer.
He has added Sean Dyche and David Kerslake to his backroom team, and admits it will take him until the closure of the transfer window on August 31 to finalise his squad for the current campaign.
Despite the financial constraints on
Watford, Mackay insists he will be given room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.
Mackay continued: “I have had some great conversations over the last couple of days with my bosses and they are certainly trying to help me in every way they can in helping to bring fresh blood into the club. So they will try and give me as much as they can to actually go and bring in players.
“But we are in a transition phase at this club and we realise there are limits as to so much we can do, and there will have to be players going as well, I am under no illusions about that.
“I have been here for a long time and I realise the way the club has been run and I know the way the club has to go forward. I am under no illusions that it will be a tough season ahead.
“It is a tough league. Every year I have been in it, it gets tougher every year despite what people say. I realise there are going to be a lot of hard games coming up but it is going to be an interesting season and I am really looking forward to the challenge.
“I want my teams to go out there and play positively and I want work rate and I want work ethic and I want the fans to see the team on the pitch caring about playing for Watford.”
