Charlton boss Alan Curbishley hasn't had much to smile about in recent weeks, what with the Addicks losing three games on the bounce following the acrimonious departure of Scott Parker to moneybags Chelsea.
But, in new signing Jerome Thomas, a £100,000 capture from Arsenal, Curbishley reckons he's acquired a young gem who can help lift the gloom at the Valley. "We watched him a few times, particularly at QPR, and he has a lot of potential. He has a chance to show us what he can do," said the Addicks chief.
"I think he was stifled of first team opportunities at Arsenal. Perhaps he lost his way a bit but he has a fresh start now and, if he reaches his potential here, he will get his chance."
Thomas, a key member of Arsenal's 2000 and 2001 FA Youth Cup-winning sides, made only a handful of first team appearances at Highbury, but reckons better days are ahead. "It's a great move for me and I'm very excited about playing for Charlton," said the 20-year-old.
"Charlton was not my only option but I really wanted to come to this club. I've always been impressed with the way they play football and that was the main attraction - I think the way Charlton play will suit my game."
Givemefootball reader and Arsenal fan Peter Ryde goes along with the Curbishley view that Thomas is a star in the making and he told us: "I agree with every word Alan Curbs has said about young Thomas.
"I have watched his progress for two years and it was very obvious to me that we had four-five very talented lads ready for the Premiership, not all at once, or in every game, but good enough to blood, with Thomas was just one.
"I really have a go at any Gunner who criticises Arsene Wenger (God) after what he has done for us, and the English game, but he has a flaw - English talent. I sense with regret that now Thomas has gone it won't be long before Jermaine Pennant leaves for nowt too, and Taylor?
"Our habit of signing players for good value fees is brilliant but why oh why do we give such talent away on the cheap?
"That's it, that's my moan, and in conclusion I would like to wish Jerome a brilliant career, hopefully coming back to Ashburton Grove when 'Curbs' becomes God's replacement?"
