New Newcastle United signing Marlon Harewood has been pleasantly surprised to find out the Magpies are not the crisis club he thought they were before he arrived on-loan from Aston Villa.

Despite the club still being up for sale, a long list of star players departing in the summer and without a permanent manager, the Toon have put all the distractions to one side and are currently top of the Championship table after the first 11 games of the campaign.

Harewood, 29, could have been forgiven for turning down a switch to St James’ Park due to all the off-field turmoil and the negativity that has surrounded the club over the last 12 months.

But stand-in boss Chris Hughton assured Harewood that everything on the playing side was running smoothly, and the big striker said: “I haven’t seen anything bad here, just a really good set of professionals.

“They were relegated last season and they were upset about it, but I haven’t seen any evidence of last season.

“They have a job to do now to get back into the Premier League – that is all I have seen here.”
