Sheffield Wednesday have signed Preston defender Eddie Nolan on an emergency loan deal until the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international, who was signed by Owls boss Alan Irvine when he was in charge at Preston in 2008, will remain with the Wednesday until May 2.

Nolan will go straight into the squad for Saturday's home clash with Ipswich and Irvine said: "We have a tough battle ahead of us in order to stay in the Championship this year and Eddie Nolan is a very good defender who will bring a lot of quality and cover to our defensive unit.

"Every game coming up is a massive game and having the opportunity to bring in a player of Eddie's quality and versatility at this time is something that I feel can help us in the remaining matches.

"It is vital that we are strong defensively and Eddie will certainly add strength to that department between now and the end of the season so I am delighted to have secured his services."
