Whilst hugely proud to wear his country’s colours, Scunthorpe United and Northern Ireland midfielder Michael O’Connor says his main focus is to help the Iron stay in the Championship this season.
The former
Crewe player, who arrived at Glanford Park for a fee of £200,000 in the summer, has already won six caps for the Province, although he was overlooked for the 1-1 friendly draw against Israel last night.
O’Connor said, “I want to play for my country, but the main objective for me this year is to keep
Scunthorpe in the Championship.
“If I get picked for Northern Ireland, then that’s great for me, but all I’m keeping focussed on really is making sure we stay in the division.
“I want to start playing well and starting games in the Championship. It’s a good test for me and I think I can do it.”
Scunny bounced back from Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at
Cardiff with a 2-1 Carling Cup victory against
Chesterfield in midweek, and O’Connor added, “The main objective in the week was to get a win, even though we wanted to play well, and we did that.
“Every game I play in I want to keep my place for the next one, so I was pleased with how it went. I’m at a new club and I want to make an impression.”
