Sheffield Wednesday's players have been ordered to stay away from their Middleswood Road training ground due to the virus that has swept through the club.

The Owls secured a 1-1 draw at Bristol City on Saturday without skipper Darren Purse, Mark Beevers, Sean McAllister, Akpo Sodje and Etienne Esajas, while Tommy Miller, replaced in the 65th minute and unused substitute Francis Jeffers were affected. Both James O'Connor and Darren Potter had only just recovered.

A club spokesman said: "Due to the situation late last week with several players showing symptoms of a viral infection ahead of the Bristol City match, the first team are not training together on Monday."

The statement continued: "This measure has been taken to prevent the possible further spread of infection and players are therefore working on their own fitness programmes ahead of returning to training on Tuesday."

Wednesday's point at Ashton Gate was their third draw on their travels this season and enough to lift them above city rivals Sheffield United on goal difference into 14th place.
