Darren Purse has agreed a two-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday following his release from Cardiff.

The experienced centre-back was out of contract in the Welsh capital at the end of this season and was deemed surplus to requirements by Bluebirds boss Dave Jones as he completed a summer clear-out last week. But Owls boss Brian Laws has wasted no time in snapping up the 32-year-old and he will finalise the agreement when the Wednesday squad report back for pre-season training on July 1.

Laws said: "My main priority this summer is to sign players with quality and experience. In Darren Purse we have secured the services of someone with both of those qualities in abundance."

He added: "He has experience of getting promoted from this division and of playing at the very top level but most importantly he is a leader on the pitch."

Laws added: "The improved budget I have been provided this year has enabled me to make some positive movements in the transfer market already and I am confident of making one or two more additions in the not too distant future."
