Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson says he feels the pressure to mastermind another successful campaign for the club despite guiding the Foxes to the League One title in his first season in charge.
City, who came from behind to beat
Swansea 2-1 in the Championship curtain raiser at the weekend, face a trip to
Macclesfield in the Carling Cup followed by tough-looking away games at
Sheffield United and
Ipswich.
And Pearson was delighted to get off to a good start against the Swans, saying, “The punters went home happy on Saturday but I’m sure they expect us to have a good season, as I do.
“There is no point playing it down. Managers are always under pressure to win games, but that’s what it’s all about and makes the game what it is.”
Pearson was pleased with his team’s opening day success, but he says it’s too early to assess what is widely regarded as the most competitive division in the Football League.
He added, “If you look at the sides in the division, there have to be a dozen teams who fancy being in the promotion shake-up because of the stature of these clubs and their history.
“There are a lot of very good teams with some very good players. All the fans at these clubs will be thinking the same thing, so why not embrace the challenge and try to achieve some success.
“We’ve got to try to win every game. We can’t do it, but we have to try. If you set your standards lower, then you will trip up. I’m sure we expect big things from us in a very competitive league.
“We were one of the big sides in League One and we managed to get out at the first attempt – but you have to manage the expectations. I’m sure teams like
Newcastle and
Middlesbrough will have a similar scenario to deal with.”
