Nick Montgomery may only be 27, but he is one of the elder statesman in the Sheffield United squad with nearly 300 games under his belt. He is in his tenth season as a first team player, and Givemefootball’s Lawrie Madden caught up with him after a 1-1 draw with Leicester which maintains thier unbeaten start in the league.Q: A hard fought point?A: Yes. Leicester played well in the first half, but we came back in the second half. We went behind but showed a lot of character and spirit to get back into the game and might have nicked it at the end, but a point was a fair result.Q: You are now considered an experienced player. Has the game changed much over the years?A: Definitely. The pace is quicker and the games are a lot more competitive. Everything has gone up a level and that might be because clubs are spending more money. It also seems tougher every year to get out of the Championship and into the Premier League.Q: You must have a good strength of character after winning the fans over, because there was a time when things weren't going well?A: There has been some hard times. I had meningitis at 17, broke my ankle at 18 and then had a load of problems a couple of years ago which began at the end of the premier League season. Not only that but it can be hard to play in front of 25000+ with a good portion on your back. But I keep battling 100% and give everything for the team.Q: You were linked with a move this summer. Anything in it?A: Interest is always nice, but it is about performing every week and forgetting the speculation. I’m not interested in touting for a move. I’ve got 12 months left and there has been talk of a new deal, but i want to get my head down and focus on football.Q: Is the club still ambitious?A: Yes. I’m proud to be part of the club and part of the expansion. The crowds and season tickets have soared in recent seasons, people know how big we are and the work the Chairman Kevin McCabe has done.  Q: You have gone full circle and now back wearing the number 4 shirt?A: I’ve had a few numbers since breaking into the team. I started with 36, then 22, 4, 17 and back to 4. I asked the kit man in the summer if I could have the number 4. I always liked 4 in the old days, it was normal for someone in my position to wear that number. When it looked like I was leaving the club Neil Warnock took it off me. It’s taken a while to get it back.Powered by: GiveMeFootball.com, football news and player interviews
