Newcastle United midfielder Kevin Nolan has been named the PFA Fans’ Championship Player of the Month for October.

The 29-year-old has been in outstanding goalscoring form for the Magpies since the start of the season and is currently the club’s leading scorer with eight.

Only last week the former Bolton man scored a brilliant 25-yard winner against Doncaster and last night he played his part in the Toon’s battling 1-0 victory at Sheffield United – a result that sees Chris Hughton’s men return to the top of the table.

Championship Fans' Player of the Month voting:

Kevin Nolan: Newcastle United - 25%
Matt Fryatt: Leicester City - 22%
Peter Whittingham: Cardiff City - 12%
Alan Smith: Newcastle United - 10%
Michael Chopra: Cardiff City - 4%
Other: - 27%

Blades’ player-coach Gary Speed, who played alongside Nolan for two years at Bolton, paid this tribute to his former teammate before last night’s clash at Bramall Lane where Newcastle claimed a precious 1-0 win.

“We don’t need to be reminded how dangerous Kevin is. He’s got a great eye for a goal,” said Speed.

“He is a great player and I speak to him quite a bit. I enjoyed the couple of years that I played alongside him and I thought we complemented each other well.

“He is a leader on the pitch and gives 100 per cent in every game and on the training pitch. He is a good footballer and it is no surprise to me than he has been banging them in this season.”

Nolan, who arrived at St James’ Park for a fee of £4 million last January, puts his fine early season form down to the fact that he is now injury-free.

“No disrespect to Bolton, but it was just the fact that I was carrying a lot of knocks. I had problems with my ankle and problems with my ribs and in the end it takes its toll,” he said.

“I could never do a proper week’s training and someone like me needs be training day in, day out, and that’s something I have managed to do since I came back for pre-season.”
