Heather Rabbatts has become the first woman ever on the Football Association's board after the FA Council ratified the appointment of her and Roger Devlin as independent non-executive directors.

The appointment of Rabbatts, a businesswoman who is the former deputy chairman of Millwall, and Devlin, who has acted as a financial advisor to several Premier League clubs, takes the board from 12 to 14 members.

FA chairman David Bernstein said: "The FA Council's ratification today is the final stage in appointing two independent non-executive directors to the FA board and I am delighted that throughout the process, the Council, shareholders and board have shown their overwhelming support."
