Reading striker Brian Howard may have been ‘Mr Grumpy’ over the last few months, but the on-loan Sheffield United man certainly put a smile on manager Brian McDermott’s face after scoring one goal and setting up another in the 2-1 victory at Doncaster.

Before Saturday, Howard had not started a game for the Royals since November due to a broken jaw, and he said: “I’ve been having a moan at Brian about being in the team and he must be sick of me complaining.

“The good thing about him is that you can say what you think and he will listen. It has made a massive difference to everybody that he has got the job permanently.

“We all know where we are and now the uncertainty has been taken away, which is great for everybody.

“All I wanted was the chance to help get the club out of the relegation zone and thankfully he gave me a go. We all want to get out of the mess we are in.

“I certainly didn’t expect to be involved in a relegation battle when I joined. I really thought we would challenge for promotion, but that is not the case and we have got to make sure we get out of trouble.”
