Reid for Coventry…Smith for Liverpool…Yorath's fears for Leeds

By Brian Beard  May 04, 2004

It looks like Peter Reid is in the frame to become manager at Coventry City after the club surprisingly sacked Eric Black on Monday, just 48 hours after the team's best away win and performance of the season, 5-2 at Gillingham.

But Coventry fans are not happy with the way the likeable Scot was discarded after just four months in charge and are planning a protest at Sunday's final league game of the season, against Crystal Palace.

Acting Chairman of the Sky Blues Trust, Mark Trevorrow, said of the dismissal of Black and his assistant Archie Knox: "We wish to express our shock and sadness not only of the timing but the manner of their departure."

Supporters are being asked to wear black armbands and sing Black's name at Sunday's game.

Back at Reid's former club Leeds United they are getting ready for a summer clear-out of the team's most saleable players, following Sunday's relegation to Division One, although that is not a mathematical certainty yet.

Alan Smith, Mark Viduka, Paul Robinson and James Milner are the top targets for a number of clubs and it looks like Liverpool have joined Newcastle and Birmingham in the chase for Smith.

With Michael Owen's future not yet sorted, in terms of a new contract, and doubts over Emile Heskey, Gerard Houllier now faces the prospect of surgery for Harry Kewell. The Aussie star is set for an operation on his troublesome ankle and has already pulled out of his country's summer international programme.

Former Leeds star Terry Yorath has expressed his concerns that Leeds are in grave danger of following the path of Sheffield Wednesday who followed their relegation from the Premiership by dropping into the Second Division.

Yorath has said: "Leeds United is absolutely a Sheffield Wednesday scenario. It is a club that is in debt and is in the midst of talks about yet another take-over. That off-the-field turmoil does not augur well for the club."

Yorath, who made nearly 200 appearances for Leeds in the glory days between 1968 and 1976, believes that who ever takes over at Elland Road will have a tough job, adding: "I cannot see them turning it around and instead they could easily do what Sheffield Wednesday have done and drop even further.

"The board are talking about bouncing back to the Premiership but the bottom line is that Leeds are just as likely to get relegated than promotion next season. It is a scenario I would hate but one they have got to face up to."

Paul Scholes has come out and admitted, according to some newspapers, that Manchester United have not put on one good match performance this season. The England midfielder has said: "We've not played great for a full 90 minutes all season."

And with the runners-up spot now a distant dream Scholes admits that the team could even lose their last chance of silverware, this season, the FA Cup.

He said of United's recent poor run of three defeats in four games: "We don't want to be going into the Cup Final not having won for three or four games. We need to go out there with a couple of wins under our belts and playing well. If we are not then the final could be a struggle."

Finally, Chelsea are increasing the momentum in their bid to buy Roma's Walter Samuel. The player's agent, Paul Oliveros has revealed that the Stamford Bridge club has made a 'huge offer' for the Argentine defender which will be 'impossible for the player or the Serie A club to turn down'.
