Reading are lining up a swoop for Watford striker Tommy Smith as a possible replacement for Kevin Doyle.
Premier League new boys
Wolves have already made it clear they would like to sign Republic of Ireland international
Doyle, while
Sunderland,
Everton and
Aston Villa have also been linked with the player.
Smith, who scored 17 goals last season, would cost in the region of £750,000 and a move to the Madejski Stadium would see him re-united with former
Hornets’ boss Brendan Rodgers.
Andre Bikey and
Stephen Hunt could also be on their way out of
Reading but new manager Rodgers said: “I don’t think there will be wholesale changes. One or two will go and I would like to replace them with other players.
“No matter what style of football you play, you need penetration in the last 25 metres. If you lose someone like Kevin Doyle then you lose a lot of penetration and he needs to be replaced.”
The possible departure of Doyle’s Republic of Ireland team-mate Hunt would leave Rodgers in the market for a left midfielder, and
Spurs’ winger
Danny Rose is thought to be on Reading’s radar.
Rose enjoyed a loan spell under Rodgers at Vicarage Road last season and talks could take place once the youngster returns from Sweden, where he is currently on duty with the England Under 21 squad.
