Northampton manager Ian Sampson is hopeful of extending the loan of Middlesbrough defender John Johnson - despite the sacking of Gareth Southgate.

Johnson, 21, has started every game since arriving at Sixfields at the end of September, and Sampson is keen for him to stay.

"John's loan runs out after this weekend's game at Morecambe but we want to keep him," said Sampson.

"It was agreed that we could extend the loan with Gareth, but obviously now he has left the club.

"We will talk to them this week but hope there will be no problem."
