Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has confirmed Egyptian international Mohamed Shawky snubbed a transfer window switch to Sheffield United.

The 27-year-old has played just five games for Boro this year, with his last start coming in May.

Southgate told Sky Sports: "Mohamed had the opportunity to go to Sheffield, but turned it down."

Shawky is currently deemed not fit enough to be involved in the first-team squad but Southgate has not ruled out considering the midfielder for selection after he regains his fitness.

"He's had a lot of commitments with Egypt over the past few weeks. He needs to get fit again and back in full training and then he will be considered," said Southgate.
