He may be the captain of Sheffield Wednesday, but Darren Purse has admitted he fears for his place in the starting line-up for this weekend’s Championship game against Coventry City.
In their last league fixture on October 4, the
Owls produced a below-par display and were beaten 3-0 at
Derby, prompting furious Wednesday boss Brian Laws to say afterwards: “There was no defence for that performance and no defence on the park.
“They have an international break now and they will have an angry manager to deal with for two weeks.”
And centre half
Purse, who arrived at Hillsborough from
Cardiff City in the summer, is worried the axe could be heading in his direction as a consequence of that loss at Pride Park.
“Nobody is undroppable, nobody is bigger than the side and nobody is bigger than the football club, it’s as simple as that,” said Purse. “I just hope I will be in the side against Coventry but if not, I will take it on the chin and then it’s how you bounce back.
“When I came into the club at the beginning of the season, it was said that I would be the person to sort out the defence and I probably haven’t lived up to everybody’s expectations.
“I am big enough to say that and the only way to rectify it is to work hard, as I have always done throughout my career, and hopefully there will be a chance for me against Coventry.”
Purse added: “If you hide away, mistakes can keep happening so I have to knuckle down, work hard and hope there won’t be too many more for the rest of the season.”
