Watford have accepted a bid of £1.8million for striker Tommy Smith.

The Coca-Cola Championship club have not revealed the identity of the 29-year-old's suitors after they made their move on Thursday.

Smith, the Hornets' player of the year who scored 17 times last season, will now be allowed to talk to the bidding club.

Thursday's developments follow a period of intense speculation over the future of the former Derby frontman.

Watford chairman Jimmy Russo told www.watfordfc.com: "We've received a new bid for Tommy and we will allow him to speak to the club in question.

"This is a new club that has expressed a desire to sign Tommy."
