It took a 13th goal of the season from Steve Jones to give Crewe victory over Wimbledon on Saturday but, as the Alex striker admits shortly, it was a three points Crewe didn't really deserve as they were run ragged by the bottom club, who, fortunately for the home side, couldn't score from any of their 20 shots. Brian Beard spoke to Steve after the win that took the Railwaymen up to ninth place, just four points off the play-off group.
Q:YOU REALLY RODE YOUR LUCK AGAINST WIMBLEDON DIDN'T YOU?
A:Yes, first half it was all credit to them as they came out with all guns blazing and it was a bit like shooting practice for them. But we lost Justin Cochrane and that was a big blow for us as he is a driving force for us in midfield but all credit to our lads. They gave a much better second half performance and we deserved the goal, I think.
Q:A DIVING HEADER FROM YOURSELF, THAT'S BECOMING A BIT OF A TRADEMARK ISN'T IT?
A:I don't know about that as I don't get that many with my head but at the end of the day I don't care how it goes in as long as it does. So I was delighted to score, especially as it meant we got all three points.
Q:YOU HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF RESULTS LIKE THAT THIS SEASON WHEN YOU HAVEN'T REALLY PLAYED WELL AS A TEAM BUT WON, THE WIN OVER IPSWICH COMES TO MIND?
A:To be fair to Wimbledon I think they are a brilliant side and have done well in their last few games and beaten sides like Reading, 3-0, and they had a great result against West Brom. They are no fools, as they showed in the first half but it was a bit more even in the second period.
Q:AND A CLEAN SHEET AS WELL, ALWAYS IMPORTANT?
A:Yes, it takes something special to beat the big man. He's a great keeper and I think he showed when he came out for his crosses that he wasn't going to be beaten.
Q:IT AUGURS WELL FOR WHEN THE INJURED PLAYERS RETURN THAT YOU CAN GET THREE POINTS WITH AN UNDER-STRENGTH TEAM?
A:I think so. We have got ten first team players out at the moment and it's chaos in the morning at the treatment room with players everywhere for treatment. But credit to the couple of 16-year- olds who have come straight into the first team and done really well.
Q:ANOTHER GOAL FOR YOU, 13 NOW I THINK. HAVE YOU SET A TARGET FOR THE SEASON?
A:No, I don't really set myself targets but I must admit I keep looking at that 20 mark and it does look quite enticing, but if I get there I get there. For now I just concentrate on a game at a time.
