Southampton showed they mean business at the top of the Npower Championship last night, beating second-placed West Ham United 1-0 and stretching their lead at the top of the table to five points.
True, we're still in the month of October, but these are exciting times for Nigel Adkins' side after gaining promotion to the second tier as runners-up in Npower League One last season.
Goalkeeper Kelvin Davis has endured several ups-and-downs during his time between the sticks at St. Mary's, but last night's result was another major step towards a Barclays Premier League return for the club.
"1-0 at home as a goalkeeper is an ideal result. Obviously it was against top opposition, but we came through the challenge well, and we're delighted to win the game," David told Saints Player.
"We'd spoken about it and highlighted our own issues about things we needed to work on, and tonight was a test of all of those things, so to come through it with a clean sheet and a win, is a big boost for us.
"There were always going to be some challenges in the game but we deserved that little bit of luck I feel because they didn't threaten us and when you look at the saves made - I didn't have to make too many."
A two-time PFA Team of the Year selection during his time on the south coast, Davis was full of praise for the club's supporters as a record crowd enjoyed the clash against the Hammers.
A run of 17 home victories suggests the ground will be a tough trip for anyone this season, and could be key to Saints maintaining their position towards the top of the table.
"It's been very enjoyable and we want to keep these games coming thick and fast, we want sell outs every week, and we enjoyed playing under that today," he added.
"Jos got his first goal and he's a great lad who is well liked in the dressing room, and everyone is delighted for him.
"It's tough in a game like tonight where you win at home and everyone probably expects you not to fulfil that, but at the end of the day it's only 12 games in, and it's a quarter of the way through the season, so there's a long way to go."
