In-form West Brom may have scored 11 goals in their last three league games to return to the top of the Championship table, but manager Roberto Di Matteo is not one to rest on his laurels.

The Baggies are currently a point clear of Newcastle, who play tonight, but the Italian revealed his is still looking to strengthen his squad in January. “I have asked for some money. Will I get it? Let’s wait and see but I have asked,” he said.

“We are working on some things and we have a number of targets. But that is what we are hoping, to improve the squad. We also have to guard against looking too far ahead.

“The moment you start thinking you are too good for this division and start planning for next season, you are going to get punished as soon as you lower your guard.

“When I am asking to improve my squad I am only thinking about this season.

With only 19 senior players and long-term injuries, that’s how it has to be. The time to plan for the Premier League is when you are in it – and we are a long way from that.

“I am not the sort of manager who panics and rushes into decisions on transfers. I didn’t do it in the summer and I won’t do it in January.”
