West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has asked for permission to open talks with Darren Ferguson about becoming the new manager at the Hawthorns.
Albion are reported to be willing to pay
Peterborough up to £1 million for the services of the former
Manchester United and
Wolves midfielder after pocketing £2 million for Celtic-bound Tony Mowbray.
Peterborough are ready to allow Ferguson to speak to Peace because Posh director of football Barry Fry fears they can no longer stand in the way of the man who is the unanimous choice of West Brom fans.
And Fry admitted the club could struggle to keep Ferguson at London Road if the Baggies meet Peterborough’s compensation demands.
“I think Darren would see most Championship clubs as a sideways step in his career but I don’t think that would be the case with West Bromwich Albion,” said Fry.
Celtic expect to complete the ‘transfer’ of Tony Mowbray, together with Peter Grant, later in the week, and chairman Peace is resigned to losing his man.
"We do not want to lose Tony because he has been an integral part of a long-term project at the club, which the vast majority of our fans have bought into," he told his club website.
"But Tony expressed his desire to talk to Celtic and, now that the compensation figure in his contract has been met to our satisfaction, that process can take place. If Tony decides to join Celtic, he would leave with our good wishes.”
