Mick McCarthy has enhanced Wolves' attacking options by signing Marlon Harewood on loan from midlands neighbours Aston Villa until the end of the season.

The striker will provide a timely boost for the Championship leaders during the last six games of the season and he could make a name for himself almost immediately when the Black Country club return to action against promotion rivals Birmingham at St Andrew's on April 6.

Villa have inserted a 24-hour recall clause into the agreement but that will only become active after the first 28 days of the loan - following the visit of QPR to Molineux on April 18.

Former club Nottingham Forest also showed an interest in taking Harewood on loan before Thursday's deadline, with manager Billy Davies claiming the deal was all but done.

It was initially suggested the 29-year-old had rejected a move to the City Ground but reports have since emerged that it may have been Villa who blocked the move, with Wolves then expressing an interest.

Harewood has found his opportunities limited at Villa Park this season, making a total of 15 appearances, mostly from the bench, in all competitions and scoring just one goal in a UEFA Cup encounter against Litex Lovech back in October.
