The current Accrington Stanley club only date their history from 1968 although there was an Accrington FC, which was one of the founder members of the Football League, later becoming the first Accrington Stanley in 1921. Stanley finished fifth in first ever season in the newly-formed Division Three North and in the 1925-26 campaign they reached the third round of the FA Cup for the first time, before losing to Bolton. In the 1950s the club finished runners-up on two occasions, as well as registering third place finish, with striker George Stewart pivotal to their success after scoring 123 goals in just four seasons. However, by 1961 they club were in deep financial trouble and Stanley submitted a letter of resignation to the Football League and were unable to fulfil their fixtures. Accrington was reformed again in 1968 although the club was unable to play competitive football again until 1971, when they joined the Lancashire Combination. The club eventually made steady progress through the non-league ranks before winning promotion to the Conference in 2003 and three years later they were back in the Football League after lifting the title.
